The Curious History of Bead
The Curious History of Bead The Curious History of Bead The Curious History of Bead By Maeve Maddox You may have heard the expression to draw a bead, meaning to take aim. A hunter, for example, draws a bead on the quarry. The expression, used both literally and figuratively, is popular with headline writers Connecticut gunman drew bead on bosses Kiefer Sutherland and 24 draw a bead on a feature film HP and Microsoft Draw a Bead on Cisco The bead in this expression comes from the small metal knob that forms the front sight of a gun. The word bead attached to this knob because of its resemblance to the kind of bead most of us probably think of when we hear the word: A small perforated body, spherical or otherwise, of glass, amber, metal, wood, etc., used as an ornament, either strung in a series to form a necklace, bracelet, etc., or sewn upon various fabrics. This general sense of bead derived in turn from rosary beads, the little markers strung together for the purpose of helping a worshipper count prayers. Originally, beads were not the little objects on the string, but the prayers being said. Bead in this sense is a cognate of German bitte, a word that is used to make a request. Someone praying with a rosary was said to be telling his beads, that is, counting his prayers. Another meaning of the verb to tell is to count. (The bank teller counts out your money.) Historically, wealthy patrons would pay people to pray for them on a regular basis. These professionals were called beadsmen or beadswomen. Keats begins his poem St. Agnes Eve with this evocation of a harsh winters evening: St. Agnes EveAh, bitter chill it was! â⬠¨ The owl, for all his feathers, was a-cold; â⬠¨ The hare limpd trembling through the frozen grass, â⬠¨And silent was the flock in woolly fold: â⬠¨Numb were the Beadsmans fingers, while he told â⬠¨His rosary, and while his frosted breath, â⬠¨Like pious incense from a censer old, â⬠¨Seemd taking flight for heavenâ⬠¦ An earlier spelling of bead was bede, from Old English gebed, prayer. The OE verb biddan meant to pray as well as to ask. By the late 14th century, the word bede/bead had attached to the objects on which the prayers were told or counted. The expression to draw a bead on is an obvious headline choice when the topic is something like gun control, Critics Draw A Bead On State House Gun Ban but I wonder if the writer who came up with this one about the popularity of rosaries with non-Catholic soldiers in Iraq realized just how clever it is: Worshippers draw bead on rosaries Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? (company law) What is meant by the statutory contract, and what is its importance for company law - Essay Example The limitation in the rights of the members could be attributed to the rights of the other members and also in the companyââ¬â¢s separate personality which could call for the best interests of the company or the will of the majority to take preference. As a result, the multifaceted nature of this ââ¬Å"contractâ⬠has created a demand for an additional directive in this area. The Nature of the Statutory Contract Contracts could be commonly found between two parties, consequently rendering third parties to intermittently acquire rights. These parties would in turn possess communal obligations as well as prima facie and any infringement is subject to an action for damages.2 On the other hand, the company contract could also be taken into consideration as unique. It covers several members making it imperative to determine who parties to it are and when it could be imposed. The requirements of Section 14 do not distinguish the company as being party to the contract instead it takes no notice of its separate legal unit, and grants only that it is compulsory as if signed and conserved by each member. Consequently, the shareholders are bound to the company and, even though not statutorily given for, the company is also bonded by the Articles, to the member. Nonetheless, the shareholders could solely implement their rights qua members3, at the same time as the articles structure a contract involving members which is generally solitary enforceable by means of the company, this is with the exception of the of member posses personal right5. On the other hand it should be taken into consideration that an ââ¬Å"outsiderâ⬠right, for example one not connected to the ââ¬Å"collective constitutional rightsâ⬠could not be imposed7. The term ââ¬Å"outsidersâ⬠could include people such as directors. There are concerns shed over the modification

Social Media Marketing Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Social Media Marketing - Research Paper Example Social media marketing refers to the concept of gaining traffic and attention through launching and running promotional campaigns, through identifying and engaging with influencers and interested parties through social media. Social media marketing is most especially effective and vital for businesses, institutions and organizations that rely heavily on referral and the word-of-mouth as their marketing and communication strategies, considering that there is no easier ways to make referrals or pass word of mouth, than through the social media, owing to its extensive coverage and accessibility. Social media marketing is thus a category of internet marketing, which applies the social media networks as the platforms for communicating and achieving the branding goals of an institution. Fundamentally, this form of marketing entails sharing of written content, audio, images and videos through the social networks, to make such contents accessible by other parties within the social media netw orks, for marketing and branding the institution. Posing for a moment to dissect the assertions that Social Media Marketing is effective for referrals and word of mouth communication, it is apparent that there is no better way to market an educational institution, than through referrals and the word of mouth. Social media is the most effective channel of discovering and combining news with promotional content, while also serving as the most effective tool for building links to different other networks. Thus, finding and responding to online conversation can be the most effective way of marketing, since social media enables even small business which has no established systems and channels of advertisement, as well as those facing resource shortages to reach more customers. (Deis & Kyle, 2010). Therefore, social media does not only offer an opportunity to advertise and promote a brand, but also an opportunity to combine and reinforce the branding content with more informative news, and in a more entertaining and interactive way, that is rarely offered by other communication and promotional channels. Thus, despite the concept of Social Media Marketing being a comparatively recent phenomenon, its role in the current business world has shifted from that of a trendy presence, into a necessary marketing and advertising platform for any business that seeks to remain relevant both in the traditional and the digital marketing (DeMers, 2013). According to a report published by the Forbes Magazine, the 2012 Social Media Marketing Industry indicated that 94% of all businesses that had a marketing department utilized the social media as one of their major

Movie Review of Maria Full of Grace and De Nadie Essay Example for Free
Movie Review of Maria Full of Grace and De Nadie Essay Maria Full of Grace is a film by Joshua Marston revealing drug trafficking world. The desperation of people sue to poverty is depicted well in this movie Columbian drug lords use mules to transport cocaine to the U. S. Mules are actually humans used to carry drugs to be transported to other countries without being detected. The mechanism is through the ingestion of capsules containing the product and stores it in the muleââ¬â¢s stomach, after which it will be expelled. Many people are attracted to this type of job because the drug lords will try to convince you that the job is easy plus it involves a large amount of money in exchange of your service to them. However, if any of the drug products was lost during the transport, you will have to deal with the brutal consequences and it means exchange of your life or your familyââ¬â¢s life as the mules are no more important as any other plastic containers (Berardinelli, 2004, p. n. pag. ). Maria, performed by Catalina Sandino Moreno is a 17-year old young girl who hates her job as a de-thorner in a factory. Her family that includes her mother, grandmother, and unmarried sister however relies on Mariaââ¬â¢s salary to survive. Maria then quits her lifeless job and finds out that she is pregnant but her boyfriend refuses to marry her. After this devastating event of her life, she accepted the offer a man gave her to be a mule of the Columbian-New York run. Together with two young girls Blanca (Yenny Paola Vega), and Lucy (Guilied Lopez), Maria thought the job was easy and was blinded by the money she will earn in this type of job. In addition, Lucy grabs the opportunity to go to New York to reunite with her sister. The three girls were not forced to be in this kind of business; they chose their own path because of their greed and need for money. They thought of United States as their only way out of poverty especially Maria as she prepares herself for her unborn unwanted child (Berardinelli, 2004, p. n. pag. ). The dramatization built by Marston in the film is flawless as he developed each character. The story is very moving as it is very realistic because of the increasing poverty in third-world countries. Moreno gives a memorable performance as she flawlessly portrayed Maria as a hopeless, desperate and selfish girl who greed for money (Berardinelli, 2004, p. n. pag. ). De Nadie Another documentary film showing the desperation of people driven by poverty is De Nadie. This film directed by Tim Dirdamal brings us to the world of migrants from South America looking for a way to enter North America. They believe that migration to the United States is the only way to get rid of poverty. However, their search for a route is often illegal and migrates from the Central America who initially has to cross Mexico before going to United States are given less attention (Coupeau, 2006, p. n. pag. ). The process of migration is by a fast moving cargo train crossing the Mexican territory. However, many aspiring migrants die or amputated as they fall and pushed off the fast moving train. This unimaginable risk is taken by those people as a solution to their miserable poor life. Se Maria, a Honduran migrant whose life was changed after seeking help in the hands of a group of Mexican nuns who conducted a fund raising activity using raffle draws. Madres de la Patrona gave food to the immigrants taking risks to enter United States (Coupeau, 2006, p. n. pag. ). . Compare and Contrast Both films are political as they expose the desperation of many people in order to escape poverty. The directors are not biased in their portrayal of poverty and the hopelessness and greed of people for money. Also, the aspiration of many people from all countries to go to United States is because of their belief that when you go to U. S, poverty will go away. What they donââ¬â¢t know is due to global crisis, many people in the U. S are now unemployed and also experiencing financial problems. Both Maria Full of Grace and De Navie showed that peopleââ¬â¢s principles are easily swayed when money is involved. The natural greed of humans to money made the characters Maria, Blanca and Lucy of Maria Full of Grace and Maria of De Navierisk their lives. They took what they though the one chance that will get them out of their miserable lives. Also, both are very realistic films since it cannot be denied that drug trafficking and illegal immigrations are two of the most known illegitimate money-making businesses. Both films showed that no one is to be blamed other than yourself because it was shown in both movies that no one forced the characters to enter drug trafficking and illegal immigration. Although they are both victims of poverty, they are not innocent victims of drug trafficking and illegal immigration. I find Maria Full of Grace more moving than De Navie since more lives are ruined in drug trafficking than in illegal immigration. Drug trafficking is a more serious problem in that the mules that act as carriers of drugs doesnââ¬â¢t realize that they are tolerating the business that ruins many lives and families. Polar ice palace :: essays research papers
Polar Ice Palace What Bill needs to do is restructure the weekend and evening public skating sessions. Its is clear that he will be more profitable with public skating that hockey skating, and this is a numbers game. If he were to weave the hockey times with the public skating times he may find himself in a better position. For example, if he were to add an early morning hockey game in on Sundays and have open skating for the ââ¬Å"kid-sittingâ⬠group in the afternoon, during the winter, this would be a solid investment. Although come the summer and fall, limit the ââ¬Å"kid-sittingâ⬠ice time and have more hockey league play. To contend with the Friday-Saturday dating market, what Bill might want to do is enforce a strict 18 or 21 age requirement by serving alcohol and marketing this age concept through advertisement to this target market. It may be very difficult to get the same age market 2 nights in a row, so he may want to have one night for adults and the other for teens/ young-adults. The idea of creating a nightclub atmosphere is excellent and should be done, on both nights and the implementation of ââ¬Å"party gamesâ⬠is a great way to bring people together, especially ââ¬Å"adultâ⬠games. As far as the young boys feeling threatened by the ââ¬Å"couples onlyâ⬠music, this might be addressed by adding a ââ¬Å"singlesâ⬠party every now and then so he can diversify his audience. Bill cannot see his investment of $2000 into lighting as a loss or his advertisement to the youth; both are long term investments that may take a while to see returns. In conclusion, he must do market research in order to justify the need to target certain groups at specified times and the financial research that will grow the greatest returns. 1.à à à à à a) Susan is purchasing the fax machine for her home while Gregââ¬â¢s is for business. My Ideal Partner Life
An ideal husband would be a person who is an ideal companion. Does it appear that I am running around in circles? I hope it does not. Through the traditional role of a husband is different from that of a wife, the qualities of a person are not sex-oriented,they are person-oriented. What do I want in the person I marry? My list may be a long one but it is sound in its priorities. I want the man I choose as a husband to be generous,to have a sense of humor and to be trusting and trustworthly. I would like to build our relationship on affection and respect and on complete frankness. A tall order? Let me explain myself. Affection and respect put together are the essence of love. They are more durable than the euphoria of romantic love linked to physical attraction. It is true that beauty contributes a great deal towards lifeââ¬â¢s pleasantness, but unreflecting, unthinking beauty has nothing to recommend itself. Respect in relationship is very importand, and note I mean respect ,note awe or fear or any other feeling but respect which includes self-respect and can be stretched a long way to cover the crevices or feelings. I would like my future husband to be frank with me and to discuss financial, emotional and other problems with me. for if there is any ground on which I cannot thread, or any occasion when I find the door closed against me,or any time when whispered conversation take place,or papers and letters are kept away,or I look askance and donââ¬â¢t get a reply, then there a lies the beginning distrust and rift. A marriage is a companionship,it extends into old age and can mature into a relationship where words need not be exchanged and still complete understanding my exist. It is a relationship which cannot be built on lies or half-truths. When I use the word ââ¬Ëfrankââ¬â¢ I do not only mean emotional friendship through they too are included. Is it not more grateful that my friends of the days when I was not yet married be known to my husband than that I spring a surprise on him or leave him to work his imagination in different directions? Similarly I would like to know about my husbandââ¬â¢s friends-men and women. Frankness should extend to all money matters. I should know (and so should be) what our economics position is. A marriage is the basic of family,it grows and matures and strengthens over the years. It cannot do so when the partner concerned pull in different directions. A home is aplace where on feels there should be uneasiness,no appearances to maintain, where one should feel free to express onself and oneââ¬â¢s own true self. This is possible if there is some basic enerosity in the members of the family for generosity backs up the desire to understand,to be less critical and more forgiving in oneââ¬â¢s approach. Donââ¬â¢t you know that a grim man is stern and unforgiving? There are numerous little problems which can be laughed away. At times this capacity to take things lightly,to see the funny side of an otherwise grim situation may cement a relationship much more than anything else. Laughter keeps one young. It is the best medicine. So letââ¬â¢s live and laugh togethe r.

Drug Abuse In Saudi Arabia - 893 Words
Introduction In 2016, Saudi Arabiaââ¬â¢s pharmaceutical expenditure have been estimated to be $6.9 billion with an annual increase by 10%. Also, pharmaceutical spending per capita is $268 and expected to rise in 2020 to $400. In Saudi Arabiaââ¬â¢s 2030 Vision, the economic growth was shifted more towards pharmaceuticals. Many factors including aging population, increasing per capita spending, and the force to purchase patented drugs are driving forces towards growth of drug expenditures. [1] Drug related factors in increasing drug expenditure Increases in drug prices are pulling attention to an increase in pharmaceutical expenditure on health care institutions. The ultimate goal of innovating drugs is the improvement of patientsââ¬â¢ quality of lifeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The drugââ¬â¢s price has raised by 51% in the past three years and one of the causes is of patent extension [6,7,8] These drugs undoubtedly improve patientsââ¬â¢ quality of life. Nonetheless they are astronomically costly. Why drugs cost this much? ââ¬Å"Companies are taking advantage of a mix of laws that force insurers to include essentially all expensive drugs in their policies, and a philosophy that demands that every new health care product be available to everyone, no matter how little it helps or how much it costs.â⬠Peter B. Bach. There are many reasons for increasing prices of drugs. Starting with patent abuses and other monopoly pricing schemes, addressed product-hopping which is intentionally prolonging drug patents to delay generic alternatives. In turn, this increases the cost [9]. For example, Actavis tried to pull a very effective and top-selling Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease drug to switch it with an extended release, a more expensive drug. This act will prolong the patent and, stop generic substitutions. Another reason is research and drug investment, and marketing and sales themselves are a costly process that pushes the manufacturer to sky-rocket the prices to have more in return. Pay-to-delay, is a third point in increased drug prices. It is paying to generic drug makers to keep them out from competing in the market [10]. Sometimes no generic competitors enter the market and the prices just neverShow MoreRelatedThe Cultural and Political Life of Saudi Arabia Essay1580 Words à |à 7 PagesCrimes puni shable by the death sentence in Saudi Arabia include murder, serious attacks on the Islam religion, adultery, dress codes, and since 1987, drug smuggling.
